2011 Wasatch Front Shop Hop

Mark your calendars for the 2012 Wasatch Front Shop Hop, June 13-16.

Paducah schmaduca! The Wasatch Front gets my vote for the "Quilting Capital of America." We are blessed with a plethora of quilt shops (over 30 shops within a 150 mile radius of Salt Lake City!) a host of fabric and pattern designers, dozens of nationally renowned instructors, and even a few fabric manufacturers. So much talent, so many different takes on a the art of quilting. Utah quilters have the best of everything!

What does it take to organize a Shop Hop? Think about it....every year, 15 competing (and the competition in Utah is stiff!) quilt shops along the Wasatch front join together to support each other and introduce you to each shop and their unique flavor. In addition to getting a taste of each shop, you have the opportunity to win terrific prizes and pick up discounts, make-and-takes, and free patterns as you discover their attributes! As the "new kid on the block" I have been very impressed with this collaboration. Everyone works so well together and concentrates on making each Shop Hop an event to be remembered. It takes a lot of time and organization and we start the week after the shop hop to begin planning next year's event. Here's the low-down for 2012...

In June we met at Whimsey Cottage (in Nancy's brand-spanking new location, absolutely fabulous! to discuss the positives and negatives of "The Best Quilt I Ever Read – Shop Hop 2011." Each shop brought the dish featured in the 2011 Shop Hop Book and their shop quilt for show and tell - very impressive! (I promise to take pictures at the 2012 follow-up meeting - I wasn't thinking that far ahead this year) The things you can do with fifteen blocks and some creativity... no two quilts were alike and they really did highlight the personality of each shop.

We passed around the evaluations. Thank you so much for taking the time to fill them out. We read each and every one and appreciate your feedback. While we know that every shop will not meet every shopper's expectation, we do our best to improve on our successes and address any suggestions and every complaint we receive.

After eating ourselves silly, we drew names for prizes and bundled them up. In addition to the grand prizes awarded, we gave out 500+ prizes to the wonderful customers who completed the shop hop! Then we got down to business for 2012. We threw a lot of ideas into the pot and after much discussion and several "top 3 choices" votes, we came up with Those Were the Days/ Classic TV for our 2012 theme. Oh, the possibilities! It's time to do some research and find the perfect classic television show....

In August we met again, this time at Corn Wagon Quilt Co. I am having a serious case of shop envy - I love Marsha's shop! http://cornwagonquilts.com/ Her classroom is wonderful and her displays and samples are fabulous.

We finalized our TV shows, took on assignments for 2012, and headed back to our shops to begin planning, ordering, and designing! I'll let each shop announce their "classic" television show.

Thimbles is tickled to have

I've already ordered my red polo shirt and sailor hat. This will be so much fun!

Corn Wagon Quilt Company

Summer is over and the children are back in school and that means more time to quilt and stitch. At Cornwagon Quilt Co. we have been upgrading our stitching department and expanding our wool department. Some of you might not know that we have an expert wool dyer on staff, Marianne Michaels, and she is constantly amazing us with the beautiful hand dyed wool she brings into the shop. We also have a bin of small hand dyed wool pieces that are perfect for when you only need a little piece of wool.
She has also taken over the stitchery department and it is so fun to come to work and see all the new stitchery patterns. She has also put quite a few of the older patterns on sale for 50% off. Stitchery is a great project to take along while you are watching children's sporting events or waiting in the car for school to get out.
We have also added some fun fabrics that can be used for clothing. You will also find new patterns to do with these fabrics.
We are also adding new fabrics and patterns to our general collection on a daily basis.
We are looking forward to seeing you here at Corn Wagon Quilt Co. and be sure to check out all the new things and take advantage of those stitchery patterns that are on sale.

Elaine's Quilt Block Exciting News!

We have had a few changes around the shop since Shop Hop! Marilyn retired and has been on several fun trips with her children and grandchildren and has left the shop in the hands of a new owner. Ione VanWagenen is the new owner and her world has revolved around fabric for over 15 years.

We are excited over all of the new changes around the shop. We have been receiving large shipments of fabric on a daily basis and have a fresh new look in the store so if you haven't been in the shop since July, come and see us!

Our Fall Celebration Week is September 6-10, and we will offer our usual 20% discount for class sign-ups during that week, as well as some great specials! We also have a trunk show featuring Ann Hansen, of Pixie Girl Quilts. She has two books coming out soon and we are excited have the privilege of displaying her latest designs! We also have fabulous instructors for our fall class line-up and have an exclusive Block-of-the-Month program to share with you.

We continue to support all of the fabric cards and Sew N' Tell classes that we have had in the past and are receiving all lines of Jo Morton fabrics (see newest quilt above) for all of you Jo lovers!

We have added more to our already large selection of batiks for all of you batik lovers and those of you who want to begin a beautiful new project with batiks. We also have a few new kits that have been very popular; Dr. Seuss Twister and Dem Bones, both of which use the Twister tool.

Last, but not least, we are pleased to announce that we have been chosen as one of the

11 featured shops in the Fall 2011 issue of Quilt Sampler magazine, published by Better Homes and Gardens. Marilyn Cowan and Joyce Weeks designed the quilt and it is a stunning Kaffe Fassett/Amy Butler combination. Kits will be available during Fall Celebration Week.

Happy Quilting!

There's always so much to do! So many new fabrics have arrived.... So many samples to make.... So many kits to cut.... Block of the Months....

5x5 Saturday The last Saturday of this month (April 30th) is a 5x5 Saturday. Any month that has a 5th Saturday has a special sale on that last Saturday. You purchase a bag for $5. The bag is good for every 5th Saturday that year. Bring in the bag (or purchase it that day) and everything that fits in the bag is 25% off. That means that almost everything in the store is 25% off. It's the perfect time to purchase a kit or quilt backings or fabric for your next project. We even have ladies come in a day or two ahead of the big sale day to scout out their purchases.

Shop Hop The Village Girls have been busy creating samples and making up new kits for the shop hop in June. The last day of the Shop Hop coincides with Heritage Days in Brigham City. There will be a one day quilt show at the courthouse (June 18th) from 10am to 4pm and lots of artisan and vendor booths to visit around courthouse square. With so much to do, you can make the trip to Brigham City a family affair.

2012 Winter Retreat We have the talented Jeanna Kimball scheduled as the teacher and lecturer for our next winter retreat (January 2012). We are taking reservations now. There will be 2 one day classes (Friday and Saturday). You may sign up for one or both. As usual, on Friday evening we will have a dinner and trunk show at the Maddox Lodge. Please call the store to make your reservations.

Pincushion Club Our wonderful customers continue to be impressed by the Pincushion Club samples on display. Lori Genther creates a wonderful, unique pincushion each month. The little pincushion to the right, Quackers, was March's project. Isn't it cute? A limited number of patterns and kits from past projects are still available.

Come on up to Brigham City and visit us anytime. We are open from 10am to 6pm Monday through Saturday.

February marked our first year as new owners of Thimbles & Threads and what a year it has been. We've survived a break-in, a flood, two broken water lines, a sewer line back-up, a snake (you don't want to know!) and the many joys of maintaining a 100+ year old building. Through trial and error we've learned the ins and outs of inventory management, how to deal with vendors/suppliers/manufacturers, and the many facets of bookkeeping and accounting that go along with it all. Whenever it seems overwhelming or impossible, a day at the shop with so many wonderful customers, fabulous fabrics, and beautiful quilts takes away all of our worries and reminds of us of how blessed we are. Thank you for making our first year a successful one!

We have a wonderful new classroom. We're enjoying it so much we've added a few more classes to our winter/spring line up:

Wacky-Four Patch with Lea Hardee

Saturday, April 23rd from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

A fun kaleidoscope quilt, this technique will have you looking at fabric in a whole new way. You'll be amazed at the possibilities!

Cost: $35.00 (includes pattern & lunch)

Frayed Fish with Dianne Gardner

Saturday, April 30th from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

I love this quilt! This is Dianne's own original pattern. A unique twist on the drunkards path, these raw-edge fish go together quickly and look great in any colorway. This is a terrific STASHBUSTER!

Cost: $15.00 (includes pattern)

6-Minute Circle with Lea Hardee

Saturday, May 14th from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

You can't appliqué circles as quickly and accurately as the 6-minute pieced circle. This technique can be used for a wide range of curved shapes. Circles, circles within circles, ovals, pears, hour glasses. Your imagination is the only limit! A wonderful addition to your piecing repertoire. Cost: $35.00 (includes pattern & lunch)

If you have an idea or suggestion for a class, please let us know. We're always looking for new ideas!

2011 Wasatch Front Shop Hop
We are anxiously preparing for the 2011 Wasatch Front Shop Hop in June. We have chosen the novel, "The Secret Garden", a charming English book about life's met and unmet expectations. We are transforming the shop into an Enlish Garden with loads of floral quilts, a garden swing and an appealing English treat. We will be featuring a display of Esther Randall's quilts and Silk Ribbon embroidery ideas. Also, Scott Blackham will be displaying and demonstrating his favorite Stack & Whack quilts. You'll want to hear him tell his tale of teaching 100 ladies how to make a Stack & Whack table runner in Park City last November. We'll also have other demos, contests and prizes.

We had a blast at our Halloween Party at last year's Shop Hop. You all willingly participated in our "bobbin' for apples", ate our "greasy" popcorn and enjoyed an old fashioned snow cone. Thanks for being such good sports. We plan on even more fun this year!

We have some great samples in the store this spring. Kathy Porter has tickled our fancy with two terrific African Quilts, one with snakes slithering across it. Everyone wants to sleep under a snake, RIGHT? So come and visit us really soon. And don't forget our 21st Birthday Party.

We hope to see you soon.

A lot is happening here at Corn Wagon Quilt Co. We have several new classes and clubs that we have not offered before. We have started what we call our "Garden Club." The club meets once a month, usually on the third Friday of the month, and we stitch and chat while we recreate the Florence Peto Calico Garden quilt that is housed in the Shelburne Museum. We have the pattern and also some kits that contain reproduce fabric from the original quilt. We are having a great time visiting, sewing and making new friends. This club is free and open to anyone who is interested in growing a flower garden out of fabric. In March Marianne Michaels will be teaching a Crazy Quilt Class. She has several examples of her crazy quilts in the store and they are a must see. She has the traditional satin, silk & velvet crazy quilt, but she has also done a wool crazy quilt and just finished a table runner using wool and then embellished it with wool folk art applique. She will also be teaching a class on wool applique and embellishment. We are also excited to have Kerry Green come and teach her City & County Wool Bucket in February. She will be coming again in April to teach her Acorn's Promise Quilt. We also have classes for all skill levels. Please check our website and look at our class schedule which includes pictures. http://cornwagonquilts.com/images/2011_Winter_Class_Schedule.pdf

In May we are excited to have Miss Rosie, Carrie Nielson, come and teach two classes. We are currently finalizing the details with Carrie, but she has talked about creating a Schnibbles pattern just for our classes. We are excited to see what she has up her sewing sleeve. Once we know the details we will post them on our website: www.cornwagonquilts.com

We have several spring looking fabric lines that have arrived recently that will help chase those winter blues away. Did you know that besides offering traditional long arm quilting, we also offer quilt basting. We can put your quilt on the long arm and do the basting you need to do before hand quilting. This eliminates bending over banquet tables or crawling around the floor. If you have quilts that didn't get done for last Christmas, now is the time to get them quilted. The turn around is much quicker. We also offer hemstitching. We have lots of receiving blanket kits, but we will also hemstitch your flannel. The cost of hemstitching is $1 a running foot and that includes having all the raw edges serged. The serging creates a beautiful ravel free edge.

We are looking forward to Shop Hop in June. Mary Ann Nelson is busy creating our Shop Hop quilt. She loves to keep us guessing on what it is going to look like. All we know is it is going to include lots of red, black, and white. She is excited about it and that means it is going to be spectacular. The question is: "How small are her pieces going to be?" She is the queen of small!

We look forward to having you stop by for a visit. We love seeing you and be sure and bring in the projects you are working on. We love show and tell!

Friday, January 21, 2011

Spring has arrived at Mormon Handicraft!

Mormon Handicraft is bursting at the seams with new fabrics for spring!

We are excited to feature new lines from our local designers such as Nancy Halvorsen, Laurie Bird, Michelle Blackhurst, Barbara Jones, and many of the Riley Blake designs with local artists contributing as well. We also have multiple new lines from national designers for you to choose from. New fabrics are arriving almost daily, so don't forget to make us a destination.

It is not too late to sign up for our Block of the Month 2011. We are featuring Wild Rose II with the fabric by Maywood Studio and the patterns and fabric designed by Marti Michelle. Or choose a more trendy line also printed by Maywood Studios called Thirteen Going on Thirty.
Visit with us the 2nd Saturday in February to join and catch up from last month. Classes run from 10-1. Pre-registration is suggested so that we have adequate kits prepared.

Be sure and stop by the week of february 14-19 for our Sweetheart Fabric Sale....20% off all regularly priced fabric. Treat yourself or someone you love!

We are so excited about Shop Hop this year with the Greatest Quilt You Ever Read. We will be transforming our quilt shop into the magical realm of "Fablehaven" by Brandon Mull. Be sure and drink your "magic milk" before you come so you can fully participate in our atmosphere!

With the new year finally here, we are all looking for inspiration to begin a new project, or to dust off an old project and get it done. At our Open House, we will have our new class samples on display to inspire you, as well as our new Block of the Month Quilt: Two, Four, Six to get you motivated. We are also taking new members in our Jan Patek's Girl Gang, Jo Morton's Little Women Club #10, and our Schnibbles Club. Our 2011 Scrap Happens club, is a good way to learn to sort, organize, and use up your scraps and stash in your next project.

Come in and see what we are offering in 2011. Class fees are discounted 10% when you sign up at the Open House
